Setup
Both cars tested: BYD Atto 3 Extended Range vs Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. Both driven in the same week, same routes, same driver.
Range
| BYD Atto 3 Extended | Tesla Model Y LR | |
|---|---|---|
| Claimed WLTP | 420 km | 533 km |
| Real-world highway | 310 km | 440 km |
Charging
BYD charges to 80% in 36 minutes on a 60 kW DC charger. Tesla achieves 80% in 24 minutes on a V3 Supercharger. Tesla's edge is the Supercharger network quality, not just speed.
Interior Quality
Surprisingly, the Atto 3 edges ahead here. The rotating infotainment screen is a genuine talking point, and the material quality exceeds expectations. Tesla's minimalism divides opinion; the lack of a dashboard instrument cluster is still polarising.
Software
Tesla's OTA cadence and software maturity remain class-leading. BYD's DiLink 4.0 is capable but lags in navigation accuracy.
Verdict
If range is your priority: Tesla. If you want more car for your money and don't do long highway trips weekly: BYD.
